Hmmm...
I've never been particularly good at writing these things. It's hard to provide a clear disinterested perspective about yourself when you're trapped in your own head all the time. But I'll give it a go.
These days, if you ask me what I do for a living I'll tell you that I'm a writer, but once upon a time, I would have said producer. I plied my trade in the video game industry for many a year, and games are still a central component of my life. I think when I was about nine years old I wanted to be an astronaut, or a fireman, or something, but then I opened my first communion gift: the NES Power Set. It ended up being a first communion in more ways than one. Ironically, I don't go to church anymore, but I never left the house of Mario.
I graduated from Digipen in 2005 and started making video games professionally. You can take a look at those projects over on the Production page. After fifteen years mining entertainment from ones and zeros I mostly hung my hat up as a producer, and made the transition into full time writing. I've been slinging words at whoever needs them for a couple of years now, and frankly, I couldn't be happier. Generally speaking, I'm a jack of all trades, and tend to float between anything that interests me. Below, you'll find a relatively complete list of my professional and personal interests. Take a gander!
Writing - I have samples on my Writing page. I got halfway through UCLA's TV writing certificate program before work pulled me back to Seattle from LA. I've continued taking writing classes over the years, and at this point probably have enough accumulated ad hoc credits to earn a degree on the subject. As far as scripts are concerned, I prefer TV, but a man can't live on teleplays alone. So I write in whatever format I'm in the mood for on any given day. I'm well versed in all forms of screenwriting, long form prose, and short form prose. Don't ask me to write poetry though, I think even a Vogon would have a hard to listening to anything I wrote in that regard.
Production - My philosophy on production is generally that I'm a facilitator for the staff. I am their buffer between the powers that be. It's gotten me in trouble on a few occasions, but it's worth it. If someone can't say "no" from time to time, what's the point in asking whether or not we can do something? I've never been particularly good at micro-managing or sitting in bug databases though, so if you ever find yourself working with me, keep that in mind.
Design - It's hard not to be a designer in the video game industry. Everybody thinks they're one. I actually have some legitimate claim to this title though. Not only am I familiar with the tools of the trade like Unreal and Unity, but I've done my fair share of scripting, spec writing, proposal writing, consulting, and even management. Plus I've played a game or two in my day, and it's a rare occurrence that I can't think of an "X meets Y" style pitch when the occasion calls for it.
Music - I play electric bass. I'm not a virtuoso , but if you need someone to thump eighth notes on the root and tell you when to change chords, I'm your man. I've been plucking away at the strings for several years now, and assuming my career in hand modeling doesn't take off, will continue to for the foreseeable future.
Improv - I've been making up stories on the spot in front of audiences for about three years. I got my start at Unexpected Production's improv school in Seattle. I did a lot of volunteer work there, and ultimately ended up on their tech team. By the time I moved back to Atlanta, I was addicted and immediately started looking for my next fix. It's a good thing the ATL has a helluva large improv scene. Lately, I've been doing tech for a local improv director, jumping in to any jam I can find, and helping local theaters set up their lighting rigs.
That about wraps it up for me. I always have projects in the works, and the stuff I'm actively developing is in the Current Projects page. Be sure to head over and check it out.
I started off writing this by claiming I didn't know how to do it, and then hundreds of words later...
If you've gotten this far down the page, thanks for reading. I hope you learned a little about me.
Now go do something more productive with your time. You know, like taking a look around my portfolio or getting in contact with me from the Contact page.
I'm always working on stuff, and if you'd like to see more of that, you can head over to my Patreon site to help support my creative efforts.
